Trekking and cycling in Lanzarote: an extraterrestrial journey

Holiday code: LAN

A week of trekking and cycling in the wildest and roughest islands of the Canaries: Lanzarote

The Canary Islands are Spanish, but as soon as you get to Lanzarote, you’ll think you’re on the Moon. Did you know that the Apollo 11 astronauts were given a picture of Lanzarote to prepare for the Moon landing? After this week, you will understand why. Discover the surreal landscape of the island, touched by 140 volcanoes that shaped hills, canyons, underground tunnels, and craters where you can now find grapevines! Through trekking and cycling, you will explore a warm and majestic landscape, surrounded by the ocean. And for a day, La Graciosa will be your personal slice of heaven. The island is only reachable via boat and does not have any paved roads.

PROGRAM

SUNDAY: We arrive in Arrecife by late afternoon. At the hotel, in the center of Puerto del Carmen, the guide awaits us. After our first dinner together, we take a walk in the Avenida di Puerto del Carmen, with its bars and nightclubs for a cocktail or a cerveza.
MONDAY: We start our day with a nice walk from Avenida di Puerto del Carmen to the old port, the Varadero, overlooking the ocean. We then proceed along the cliff that takes us to Puerto Calero, a small sailboat port. After a short break, we keep going towards Playa Quemada, a small hamlet where we can have lunch by the ocean. We recharge by taking a swim and laying in the sun, ready to get back to the hotel. Distance: 16-18km
TUESDAY: We head to Arrecife from Puerto del Carmen, in a 20km long bicycle lane by the shore. Passing through the peaceful Matagorda, we reach the typical and less crowded Playa Honda, where we stop for lunch. Later, we cycle to the capital of the island, Arrecife. Here we can do some shopping and visit the town’s marina. We then head back to Puerto del Carmen for some free time and dinner. Distance: 30-40 km
WEDNESDAY: Today, we are headed to the heart of Lanzarote. It’s time to visit the Timanfaya National Park: an impressive stretch of solidified lava. The home of the volcanoes is truly breathtaking, with its craters and lunar-like landscape. We pass by the vineyards of La Geria with our bikes, stopping by Bodega El Grifo. We discover the traditions of this peculiar viticulture, which is done directly in the lava through the gravelly ground. The vines are later protected from the wind by small walls that make the landscape truly unique. We cycle back to Puerto del Carmen just in time for dinner. Distance: 30-40 km
THURSDAY: free day, even though our guide is always available for extra excursions. If you want to stay active, we suggest a visit to Los Hervideros and its rocky cliffs facing the Atlantic. The waves of the oceanic current create some sort of fog that almost make the water boil. Be mesmerized by the foamy waves crashing on the rocks. Back in the hotel, you can tell us all about your day over dinner.
FRIDAY: After breakfast, we leave for Orzola’s port, in the north of Lanzarote. From here, we take a ferry to the famous Isla la Graciosa. On foot, we do an easy excursion towards Playa della Francesca, where we can rest by the beach, under the Amarilla mountain and its colors. After a swim in the ocean and free lunch on the beach, we head back to the port to return to Lanzarote and have a last dinner together. Distance: 16-18km
SATURDAY: After breakfast, we get ready to say goodbye to this little slice of heaven.
